Makua Military Reservation - A 1998 lawsuit on behalf of the group Malama Makua — which has fought to evict the Army and return the land to Hawaii — brought a halt to live-fire exercises there with none being conducted since 2004. Under a 2002 court-
sanctioned agreement, the Army and Malama Makua have cooperated for regular cultural access days to visit sites around the valley open to members of the public who sign up in advance. Sacred Mākua is a place where Papa (Earth mother) and Wākea (sky father) created human life, a place of healing and refuge, not a place for bombs and bullets or military training by the US military.

The current lease in Mākua expires in 2029 (see countdown clock above), but the process of lease renewal has already started.
The first step in the process is for the army to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement. Public comments regarding the EIS and renewal were due no later than Wednesday, September 1. Below is an excerpt from the army's Public Comment Form website.

The fire started at about 12:30 p.m. Friday near the south ridge of the reservation. Army firefighters responded to the blaze and called on the Wheeler Army Airfield-based 25th Combat Aviation Brigade for support. Army aviation support has dropped more than
120 buckets of water on the fire totaling more than 72,000 gallons of water. Retired U.S. Army Colonel Ann Wright, who also spent years as a U.S. diplomat internationally, retired from the U.S. military because she did not believe the Iraq war was a just war.
She lives on Oahu, but now travels the world speaking about the dangers of militarization. Colonel Wright is a strong supporter of the Mālama Mākua mission. In March, U.S. Rep. Kai Kahele announced that he had introduced the Leandra Wai Act — named in honor of the late Malama Makua co-founder — which would require the Army to remedy the Makua Military Reservation and return the land to Hawaii.
